Bahrain is one of the easiest and most cost-effective places to start a business in the Gulf. With 100% foreign ownership across most sectors, 0% personal and corporate income tax, and commercial registration that can be issued in as little as 1–3 days through the Sijilat portal, the Kingdom has become a natural gateway to the wider GCC market of over 50 million people.

This guide walks you through exactly how to set up a company in Bahrain — from choosing the right legal structure to getting your Commercial Registration (CR), opening a corporate bank account, and processing visas.

Step 1: Choose your business activity

Every Bahraini company is licensed to carry out specific commercial activities, based on the international ISIC classification. Your chosen activities determine which legal structures are available to you, whether 100% foreign ownership is allowed, and whether any external approvals are required (for example, from the Central Bank of Bahrain for financial services, or the NHRA for healthcare). Getting your activities right from the start saves you from costly amendments later.

Step 2: Select the right legal structure

The most common structures for foreign investors are:

  • WLL (With Limited Liability) — the most popular choice for SMEs. Two or more shareholders, 100% foreign ownership, no minimum capital, and can sponsor employee visas.
  • SPC (Single Person Company) — ideal for solo founders. One shareholder, limited liability, and the fastest setup path.
  • Branch office — an extension of a foreign parent company, 100% owned by the parent, useful for market testing and bidding on contracts.
  • BSC (Bahrain Shareholding Company) — for larger ventures that may raise capital or list publicly.

Step 3: Reserve your trade name and prepare documents

Reserve your company’s trade name and prepare the incorporation documents. For most structures this includes the Memorandum of Association (MOA), shareholder passports and identification, a registered office address or lease, and — for corporate shareholders — attested company documents and board resolutions.

Step 4: Apply for your Commercial Registration (CR) via Sijilat

The Commercial Registration is your official licence to operate in Bahrain, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce through the Sijilat portal. Once your documents are ready and any external approvals are secured, a standard CR can be issued in 1–3 business days. Learn more on our Commercial Registration service page.

Step 5: Open a corporate bank account

With your CR issued, you can open a corporate bank account with a local or international bank in Bahrain. Account opening typically takes 5–7 working days and requires your CR, MOA, and shareholder due-diligence documents. See our corporate banking service for support.

Step 6: Register for visas and employment permits

As a company owner you can sponsor your own residence visa, plus visas for employees and dependants, through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and NPRA. Bahrain also offers a Golden Residency visa for qualifying investors and entrepreneurs. See our visa & immigration service.

How long does it take to set up a company in Bahrain?

With documents prepared, the Commercial Registration itself takes 1–3 business days. Adding bank account opening and visa processing, most businesses are fully operational within 2–4 weeks.

How much does it cost?

Total cost depends on your legal structure, activities, office solution, and visa requirements. View our transparent pricing packages for fixed, all-in options.
